Not surprisingly, with their long history of occupation, the Zantiots were ardent supporters of Independence.

The poet, Dionysis Solomos, was one of the leading figures inthe war. His vision of Liberty rising up from out of the bones of all those who had suffered or died in her cause can be seen in the Statue of Liberty at Solomos Square in Zante Town.

Despite official British opposition to Independence, the island became a centre for British supporters of the war, the most famous of whom was Lord Byron. Even Sir Thomas Maitland sent help to Independence fighters on mainland Greece.
The struggle for Independence spanned several decades; war was first declared in 1824 but Zakynthos was not united with Greece until 1864.

The island was occupied by both Nazis and Italian soldiers during the Second World War. When the Nazis first took control of Zakynthos, they demanded that the Mayor of Zante Town, Pavlos Karreris, compile and hand over a list of all the Jewish families resident on the island.
When Karreris handed over the list it only had two names upon it; his and that of the Bishop of Zakynthos. He made it clear that they wanted to take anyone, it would have to be himself and the Bishop; he would not betray any of his fellow islanders.

Tourism first came to Zakynthos about twenty years ago and the parts of the island were transformed.
Previously worthless and deserted coastal land has become prime development land. The first tourist plane to touch down at Zakynthos airport was greeted by a large number of Zakynthians and a brass band!

Now, the number of people on the island reaches over 300,000 during the summer months, a 10 fold increase on the resident population!
