The history of Lemnos begins around 4,000 AD, from the hamlet of Poliohni, which developed particularly well in the early Bronze Age.

The island has been inhabited by Sintians, Kares, Cretans, Minyans, Pelasghians and was once occupied by Athenians, Romans, Venetians, as well as the Turks, from whom it gained independence in 1912.

Its rich history means Lemnos is known for its significant archaeological and cultural resources.
On the eastern shores of the island stands Poliohni, one of the oldest organized communities in Europe, while on the north-eastern part of Lemnos lies the ancient city Hephaestia, which peaked in the 6th and 5th centuries BC.
The shrine of Kaveiria, which developed in the Tyrrenean era, is considered to be even more important than that of the island of Samothraki. On the western part of the island, Myrina and the temple of Artemis are equally important archaeological sites.
