France

Being more than twice the size of Britain and with nearly a quarter of its 60 million population living and working in the Paris area, it’s no wonder vast areas of the country seem deserted. France has an amazing diversity of landscape and climate – from the snow capped Alps and Pyrénées to the scorching shoreline of the Côte d’Azur. Verdant valleys in Normandy and Brittany contrast sharply with the arid olive groves in Provence, but whatever the countryside, it is always France. Some of the earliest traces of human habitation in Europe have been found in l’Hexagone and while much of the country seems rural with historic architecture, there is also some of the most progressive city development anywhere on the continent.

Purchasing a property

Having read the regulations about purchasing property in France, and if you are eligible, first check with property agents to just get a feel of what is available and at what price. We strongly advise prospective purchasers not to rush and to inspect all suitable properties before making final decisions. We believe that the best time to look for property in France is after the main tourist season is over: September to November. Our advice would also be that after selecting an area or location, you should go and stay there for a period of time to get a good feel about the locality, environment, people and transport.

We feel that for a non-French speaking foreigner, the easiest route to purchasing property would be to go through an agency, as they are more than likely to have staff who speak English, who know local lawyers and who will look after your application.

Living in France

Wherever you settle, you are more than likely to find some English speaking people. French are friendly and decent people. It is highly unlikely that you will be unwelcome or taken advantage of in some way. But common sense tells you to always get advice from either somebody you know well or your estate agent before making decisions such as getting builders, buying furniture etc.
